The Kind Hills – Clusterluck

By 44faced on Jul 29, 2023 in Music - 0 Comments

The album Clusterluck by The Kind Hills features 10 warm and relaxed indie-tunes that are the perfect soundtrack for a chilled picnic in the countryside, an exhausted or hung-over moment in bed or a long, beautiful road trip. The band call it ‘music to fall asleep to’ and they mean that in a positive way. Some influences are obvious (Beach House on ‘Summer’ or Ducktails on ‘Volunteer’) but on all tracks the band essentially plays their own, laid-back, dreamy indie pop. Standout tracks are ‘waiting for the good times’ and ‘let youth take over’.

About The Kind Hills: Hailing from all corners of the globe, The Kind Hills stand as a testament to the transcendent power of music. The band, a cohort of long-standing friends who met while studying in Australia, now create captivating soundscapes from their respective homes worldwide. Their innovative approach to songwriting and recording has given rise to a deeply personal yet universally relatable body of work. The Kind Hills’ new album, Clusterluck, released on July 28, is a magnificent embodiment of this ethos.

Sebastian Reynolds – Cascade

By 44faced on Jul 21, 2023 in Music - 0 Comments

Sebastian Reynolds’ “Cascade” intones a captivating voice as forbidding drones ring against throbbing rhythms, leaving listeners unsure whether to dance or to seek cover.

Inspired by Reynolds’ love for bands such as Liars, Public Service Broadcasting and Radiohead, “Cascade” is an electrifying taste of what’s to come from his upcoming full-length Canary — taught, dystopic drones for a civilization in collapse marked by a compositional approach influenced by composers like Susumu Yokota, Luigi Nono, Olivier Messiaen, and Karlheinz Stockhausen.

Once again, Reynolds traverses modern classical composition and retro-futurist production, this time visiting upon the stillbirth of a child, the death of one’s parents, the nature of consciousness, the relationship between mind and body, the fragmentation of our collective mindscape, and the awakening of machine intelligence.

References to John F. Kennedy, Carl Jung, and Robert Monroe’s influential book Journeys Out of the Body pepper Reynolds’ meditations as samples from contemporary figures Sam Harris, Lex Friedman, and Navy SEAL Jocko Willink both guide and disorient the listener. As always, Reynolds is keen on preserving a sense of meaning in the mélange of programmed and organic sounds he’s come to be known for.

Reynolds has collaborated with German classical/expressionist musician/composers Anne Müller (Erased Tapes) and Alex Stolze (Bodi Bill) in their Solo Collective project, as well as Mike Bannard at The Aviary and others. He also continues to work on commissions for Neon Dance. Recent works with the company include Puzzle Creature, Prehension Blooms, the Thai-inspired Mahajanaka Dance Drama, and Manuals for Living and Dying. He is currently working on a film commission for Oxford University. His music has been widely supported across the BBC’s networks and beyond. He hails from Oxford, where he spent his formative years cutting his teeth in the UK cult outfits Braindead Collective and Keyboard Choir.

Jessiah – Quelle

By 44faced on Apr 24, 2023 in Music - 0 Comments

Self-taught multi-instrumentalist, composer and songwriter, Jessiah grew up amidst the sparse deserts and majestic mountains of Tucson, Arizona, in the United States. Over the last couple of years, his captivating and diverse music content has earned him a substantial following of over 1.2 million fans across social media and firmly positioned him as an exciting and emerging pioneer of contemporary classical music.

With a distinctive and unique collaboration of sound, soul and spirituality, Jessiah’s compositions mirror his home’s mesmerizing, vast landscapes and take listeners on an immersive journey, rich and varied in timbre. His work explores emotion, nature and life in a stunning conversation between each note and narrative.

This enchanting first piece came to life during a trip home to Arizona in August of last year. While performing at a wedding, Jessiah was offered the chance to use a local studio to record some of his creations. A little unprepared and slightly reluctantly, he sat down at a beautiful 9ft concert grand piano and began to improvise and record. He describes this song as a reflection of the challenges, confusion, and clarity that life can bring. A bittersweet acknowledgement of the growth that comes from leaving home but the unbreakable roots that remain – grounding us in our journey and re-enforcing the importance of family. You can hear Jessiah talk first-hand about the song here.

His debut release ‘QUELLE’, is a self-composed, piano piece dedicated to his older sister, with whom he lost contact around seven years ago. ‘I wanted to name this piece after her because she was one of the first people that I lost in my life, and it just shows that there is both beauty and restoration that can come from broken things.’

Returning to the very beginning and reflecting on his journey, this first composition focuses on the simplicity and intricacy of a solo piano, where Jessiah’s journey began. The music video features the original upright piano that he learned on, and includes a montage of personal home footage from childhood, specifically documenting his long-term relationship with the keys.

Whilst this may be his first public release, Jessiah is an incredibly accomplished musician and vocalist. He plans to integrate other instruments and collaborations into his future releases – continuing to share his captivating story and the dedication to his craft. He is based in Los Angeles, California, pursuing his musical endeavors full-time.

GoldEater – Circling the Summit

By 44faced on Apr 23, 2023 in Music - 0 Comments

Dark IDM / electronic. Bobbing and slamming bass synths, bit-blurred hazy synth leads, and busy mid tempo to downtempo hard hitting grooves and beats. Inspired by Aphex Twin – trying to find calm in the chaos.

GoldEater is the industrial-aggressive dark electronic project from Paul G. Marchesani: AKA Forest Kids Collective. After a 4 year hiatus from Psychic Shards – a 2019 EP showcasing the main styles and concept this project can be. Paul slowly began building up a follow up EP in 2021 then promptly left them on the back burner for 2 more years. With some new skills and toys to work with today, Paul remixed and remastered Circling the Summit and is now in process of finalizing the rest of the EP for later this year.
